Floods Hit Ghana Digital Centre, Affect 23 Businesses

Ghana Digital Centres Limited has suffered major losses after heavy rainfall flooded its premises on Monday, June 29, disrupting work and damaging several offices.

The flood affected 23 businesses operating from the technology hub. Items including laptops, furniture, carpets and other office equipment were destroyed by the water.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Digital Centres Limited, Christine Adwoa Agyapomaa Ansong, described the incident as one of the most serious disasters the centre has faced since it was established.

She said management had no choice but to ask many workers to stay home temporarily because the facility is currently not safe for normal business activities.

According to her, the flood did not only affect the centre itself but also its tenants, who contribute significantly to the company’s income.

Christine Ansong explained that some laptops were fully covered by the floodwater, and experts are being consulted to determine whether any of them can be restored.

She added that although some information is safely stored on cloud platforms, many physical properties have been badly damaged.

The Deputy CEO said the centre depends mainly on internally generated funds, especially money from renting office spaces to technology companies and business process outsourcing firms.

She noted that management is preparing a full report on the incident to determine the level of destruction and present it to the government.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has visited the centre to inspect the damage.

Christine Ansong appealed to the government, private institutions and other stakeholders to support the restoration of the facility so affected businesses can return to work.
