Anti-Galamsey Team Seizes Excavators Near Adansi Asokwa Hospital
The Anti-Illegal Mining Task Force has seized two excavators and a pickup truck during an operation at a suspected illegal mining site near the Adansi Asokwa Hospital in the Ashanti Region.
According to the Ashanti Regional Minister, the raid was carried out after officials received information on Wednesday morning about illegal mining activities taking place close to the hospital.
The Minister said the suspects escaped from the area after realising that the authorities had been informed about their activities.
During the operation, the task force impounded two excavators and one pickup truck. Investigations have since begun to identify and arrest those behind the illegal mining operation.
The Minister also disclosed that attempts to trace the owners of the affected land were unsuccessful.
He said the damaged land would be restored under the government’s land reclamation programme.
He added that steps would also be taken to ensure that ownership of the land returns to the Government of Ghana, so it can be used in the future to support services at the hospital.
The Regional Minister praised the whistleblower whose information led to the operation.
He also encouraged members of the public to remain alert and continue reporting illegal mining and other activities that harm the environment.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the fight against galamsey, especially in areas close to important public facilities and environmentally sensitive locations.
